There are nine golfers within a stroke of the leader after the first round of The Open Championship. The second round tees of Friday.
The first round of the British Open from Royal Portrush is in and, as often has been the case, after 18 holes, the leaderboard is quite crowded.
Five golfers from five different nations, none of them the biggest of names, are tied for first at -4, while four more, including Scottie Scheffler, are one stroke back.
A number of big names kept themselves in it, including tournament favorite and native son to Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy (-1). Phil Mickelson (-1) also kept himself alive as he looks for some magic at age 55.

When is the second round of the British Open?
The second round begins Friday morning at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Because of time zone differences that will actually be the final minutes of Thursday in America's Mountain time zone.

Where is the British Open?
For the third time in its history, Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland is hosting The Open Championship (1951 and 2019 were the other years). It is the only course in Northern Ireland that has hosted thee Open, as it usually alternates between Scotland and England.
The town of Portrush is a resort town on the North coast of the island of Ireland, part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It has a population of 6,150 people, who are subjects of King Charles III.
What is the cut at the British Open?
The tournament began with 156 golfers. After Friday's second round, the field is cut to 70, plus ties. So if there is a 10-way tie for 65th, all would make the cut and 75 golfers would play in the final two rounds.
Who is Jacob Skov Olesen?
The 26-year-old Dane won The Amateur Championship (the amateur version of the British Open) last year, becoming the first person from Denmark to win that tournament. In 2024 he also competed in the only major of his career, when he made the cut and finished 60th in the British Open.
He started his collegiate career at Ranger College in Texas where he won the NJCAA Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award. He then played for three years at TCU where he graduated before playing a final season in 2-24 as a graduate student at Arkansas.
He then turned pro and is now on the European Tour.
Who is Harris English?
English is a 35-year-old from America. The Georgia native golfed collegiately for the University of Georgia. He has five tour wins and finished as the runner-up this year's PGA Championship. His best finish in a British Open was in 2013 when he was 15th.

Mickelson and McIlroy each shot -1 for the round and are three shots out of first. For Mickelson is marked his best opening round at The Open since 2016. McIlroy had an up-and-down round, bogeying three of four holes from 11 through 14
