Despite plenty of trade rumors, odds are, LeBron James will be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers in what will be a record-breaking 23rd NBA season. Yet, James is also entering the final year of his contract, leaving his playing future in question. He’s also already the oldest player in the NBA, and James will turn 41 years old in December during the upcoming season.

While it appears incredibly unlikely that the Lakers or LeBron try parting ways this offseason, the future first-ballot Hall of Famer clearly doesn’t have much time left in the NBA. It’s not like he can’t still get buckets, LeBron averaged 24.4 points per game last season.

However, Brett Siegel of Clutch Points believes LeBron could be “gearing up” to retire after playing one more season.

“Many around the league are beginning to connect the dots that James may not sign another contract with the Lakers because he may not sign another contract at all. Everyone knows that retirement is on the horizon for LeBron, and multiple agents, scouts, and rival team representatives shared with ClutchPoints that they believe James is gearing up to announce he will retire after the 2025-26 season.”

James will play out his $52.6 player option for the upcoming season, but after that? It’s anyone’s guess.

He could certainly re-sign with the Lakers, or possibly even chase another championship contender elsewhere. Though, in the event that LeBron doesn’t call it quits, he’d likely still play close to his family in California.

Either way, we may actually be nearing the end of the era for one of the greatest players to ever pick up a basketball.
