Why Liverpool Must Consider a Bold Move for Marc Guehi This Summer

As Liverpool reshape their squad, the noise around their attacking targets has reached a familiar crescendo. Yet, it is in the quieter end of the pitch – the foundation of any serious title challenge – where the most pressing need might lie. One name continues to surface, whispered first in analysis, now spoken aloud with urgency: Marc Guehi.

Pearce’s Call: Guehi is England’s Centre-Back-in-Waiting

Former England and Nottingham Forest stalwart Stuart Pearce has added his voice to the conversation with emphatic clarity. Speaking to Boylesports(via Liverpool Echo), Pearce declared:

“I love Marc Guehi and I think he’s now England’s first defender on the team sheet. I think he’s probably a better international centre-half than he is a Premier League centre-half, but he’s low maintenance.” Photo: IMAGO

There’s a rare calmness to Guehi’s game that doesn’t cry for attention but demands appreciation. He’s not a showman, but a tactician; a player who understands positioning, who tracks danger before it becomes a crisis. Pearce continued:

“Looking at him, he plays with real consistency and he reads the game well. For me, I would be looking to get him out of Crystal Palace if he’s available. If you’re Liverpool, to have him, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk – wow! I would take him all day long.”

Defensive Depth, Homegrown Advantage

Liverpool’s backline is not in crisis, but it is in flux. Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen has cut into Arne Slot’s centre-back options, while Konate’s contract uncertainty is becoming a subplot to monitor. Add to that the homegrown quota concerns, and suddenly Guehi begins to tick boxes that few others do.

At 25, Guehi has Premier League experience, international pedigree, and – crucially – time on his side. He is both a solution to the now and an investment in the future. With his best years still to come, he represents the kind of mid-career solidity that Liverpool have sought in recent windows.

Pearce summed it up simply:

“If I was Liverpool, if I was Newcastle, all of those teams, I’d be all over him to try and sign him.”

Liverpool have been proactive this summer. But if they are to sustain another title push and navigate multiple competitions, another central defender is a necessity, not a luxury. Guehi, measured and modern, might just be the answer.
