Knicks may sign recently-waived ex-76ers big, skilled Karl-Anthony Towns backup option

The New York Knicks could target an experienced frontcourt option in free agency.

The New York Knicks will aim to make another lengthy postseason run in 2025-26, this time with a depth-centered focus.

New York kicked off their post-Tom Thibodeau era by acquiring 2021 Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson and versatile forward Guerschon Yabusele on team-friendly deals in free agency to serve as integral members of newly-minted head coach Mike Brown's rotation, and the franchise might not stop here.

To continue on their quest to beef up their reserve rotation, the Knicks' front office could entertain the idea of landing more frontcourt help. If that desire becomes apparent, a reliable 6-foot-10 center might quickly become a priority as the 2025 offseason rolls along.

In an effort to build upon their successful summer, the Knicks may offer a deal to one of the newest entrants to the free agency landscape, Richaun Holmes.

After the Washington Wizards' decision to waive Holmes was announced on Monday evening, the consistent frontcourt presence and former second-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft to the Philadelphia 76ers became an unrestricted free agent that could see some interest from contending teams looking for a security blanket addition at the center position.

At 31 years old, Holmes authored an incredibly efficient campaign with the Wizards in a small sample size of 31 appearances, averaging 7.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 0.7 blocks while knocking down 64.7% of his looks from the field and a career-best 83.3% of his opportunities at the free-throw line.

Precious Achiuwa's unrestricted free agency situation has yet to be resolved, and the Knicks could reach out to Holmes if a third-string center spot becomes vacant.

Holmes would be heading into his 11th NBA season in 2025-26 if he were to be picked up once again this summer, and his career contributions of 8.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in just 19.1 minutes of action over a decade in the league could pique the interest of New York in the coming days or weeks.
