A Matt Shaw replacement would be nice for the Chicago Cubs during the trade deadline on July 31. However, it's also possible that the Cubs could be outbid by some teams if they aren’t willing to move on from multiple prospects.

There seems to be a clear top third baseman available, and that's Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cubs are expected to show interest in a third baseman, with his name coming up a few times.

However, the New York Yankees are also very interested in the right-handed slugger, as far as Suarez has even recently talked about rumors surrounding him and New York.

Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw (6) throws out St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yohel Pozo (63) during the ninth inning at Wrigley Field.

When searching for where the slugger with 31 home runs might end up, Sportsnaut recently predicted that the Cubs would lose him in a deal with the Yankees, noting New York's previous interest.

“The New York Yankees’ interest in third baseman Eugenio Suarez is well-documented at this point. New York already moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base, opening up a spot at the hot corner for an acquisition at the MLB trade deadline. With the Arizona Diamondbacks entering the All-Star Break 5.5 games out of the last WC spot in the National League, it’s reasonable to assume they’ll be mini-sellers. Suarez (31 home runs, 78 RBI and .889 OPS) is an ideal addition to the Yankees lineup,” they wrote.

Unless another third baseman becomes available, who is better than Suarez, although there aren't many of those around the league, the Cubs would have to get creative here.

That doesn't mean they won't have an opportunity to get better at the hot corner, but Suarez would be the prize, so it’s something the front office has to keep in the back of their minds.
