Werder Bremen's Mitchell Weiser has suffered a cruciate ligament tear in his right knee and will be sidelined for many months, the Bundesliga club has said.
Bremen said that midfielder Weiser sustained the injury during training on Wednesday afternoon and that treatment will be determined over the next days.
"News like this hurts all of us a lot. It's a blow for us both on a personal and sporting level," new coach Horst Steffen said in a statement.
"I'm incredibly sorry for Mitch. As a team and as a club, we will now do everything we can to ensure that he recovers as quickly as possible and can return to the team."
Weiser, 31, is the third prominent player sidelined for Bremen. Marvin Ducksch and Jens Stage are out for several weeks with calf and foot injury, respectively.
The three were the top scorers in the past season when Bremen finished eighth in the Bundesliga. Bremen start the new league season on August 23 at Eintracht Frankfurt.
