The New York Mets reportedly contacted the Chicago Cubs to discuss a trade involving a superstar in exchange for Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Mets Called Cubs Looking to Trade Superstar for Pete Crow-Armstrong: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Mets have to be looking back on their decision to trade Pete Crow-Armstrong for Javier Baez as one of the worst mistakes the organization has ever made.
Unfortunately, that was in a much different time than now, with completely new higher-ups in place. Ultimately, the Mets made a mistake, but it's something they cannot retract.
However, according to a recent report from SNY's Andy Martino, the Chicago Cubs attempted to fix their decision, stating that during the 2023 MLB trade deadline, the Mets contacted the Cubs about a potential swap involving Crow-Armstrong and Pete Alonso.
“During this time, the Mets front office hatched a brief, outside-the-box idea,” Martino reported. “What about calling the Cubs to feel them out about Pete for Pete? The Cubs were known to have liked Alonso, and rumored to be weighing a pursuit of him.
“According to league sources with direct knowledge of the situation, the call was made. The conversation was brief. The answer was no.”
There have been reports over the past few years that the Cubs could be interested in Alonso.
Ultimately, the Cubs have been in a decent position at first base because Michael Busch has continued to swing the bat at a very high level, and he's much cheaper than Alonso due to being in a pre-arbitration situation.
While Alonso would be a decent pickup, it's also fair to note that this type of trade wouldn't have made much sense from the Cubs' perspective then.
The Cubs were in a position where they believed their young talent would be the reason for their current success.
While that's the case because of individuals like Crow-Armstrong, it's mainly because of what they've done with external options.
