Real Madrid may soon find themselves in a position they had not planned for this summer – searching for a new goalkeeper.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Andriy Lunin is seriously considering leaving the Bernabéu in search of more playing time, despite being under contract until 2030, which could force Madrid to enter the market.

At 26, Lunin is well aware of his role as Thibaut Courtois’ backup. Last season, he featured in 14 matches, including in the Copa del Rey except for the final.

The 2023-24 campaign followed a similar pattern, with Lunin playing a crucial part in helping Real Madrid reach the Champions League final, only for Courtois to reclaim the starting spot in the decisive match.

Meanwhile, several clubs have already shown interest in Lunin. Galatasaray, Villarreal, and even Oviedo have made inquiries about his availability.

In fact, reports from Spain suggest Villarreal have already reached out to Madrid to explore a possible transfer. The Ukrainian keeper is at a career crossroads, knowing he needs regular minutes, especially with the FIFA World Cup approaching next year.

Real Madrid would prefer to keep things as they are, with Courtois as the number one and Lunin as a reliable backup.

The club values the Ukrainian’s professionalism and understands his importance, particularly after he stepped up admirably when Courtois was sidelined with injury.

However, Lunin’s desire for consistent game time is understandable. At this stage in his career, sitting on the bench no longer feels like the right path.

If Lunin decides to move on, Real Madrid will face a serious challenge. Sergio Mestre is currently next in line, but the youngster has no first-team experience at the professional level.

As a result, Real Madrid might be forced to enter the transfer market to find a suitable replacement for Lunin.

The club had not planned for this scenario, but given the circumstances, it may soon become a priority to secure depth in the goalkeeping department before the season begins.
