NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal is never one to hold back, and during a recent appearance on the "Off The Record" podcast hosted by Bailey Jackson and Lachelle Smith, he made it clear that he wants Angel Reese to double down on her fiery rivalry with Caitlin Clark.
The topic arose as the hosts discussed the intense, headline-grabbing dynamic between Reese and Clark, which began during their college days and has continued into their rookie WNBA seasons. Shaq, who has long been a supporter of Reese, praised her infamous “ring finger” celebration after LSU’s 2023 national championship win over Clark’s Iowa squad.
“When Angel did (gestures at ring finger), that was excellent marketing,” Shaq said. “Then you had people, ‘Oh why’d she do that?’ Why not? Do it again. That’s marketing.”
For O’Neal, the moment wasn’t about disrespect. It was about building a storyline, engaging fans, and highlighting elite competition--something he believes the league needs more of.
“I’ve seen those two cross paths. They’re not going to fight each other. That’s competition, that’s why they’re great players,” he added. “You’ve got this person you’re pumping up, you’ve got this person, ‘Oh, they’re bad.’ And then the bad finally beats the good?” he said, before mock clapping and adding, “That’s the (expletive) that I like!”
Shaq also took a moment to show respect to Clark, calling her a competitor with the right mindset. He applauded both players for what they’ve done to elevate the women’s game, pointing out how their rivalry has fueled record-breaking attendance and viewership numbers across both college basketball and the WNBA.
His advice to Reese? Don’t shy away from the spotlight.
With Clark and Reese now suiting up for the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky, respectively, their on-court clashes have only intensified and Shaq is all for it. If Reese brings the fire again, he won’t just approve, he’ll be cheering from the front row.
