Greg McElroy Sets the Record Straight on Nick Saban’s Return After Stirring Speculation

Greg McElroy clears their air on Nick Saban's potential return.

Greg McElroy Sets the Record Straight on Nick Saban’s Return After Stirring Speculation originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

There was one big question on everybody's mind during the first day of the annual SEC Football Media Days on Monday, and that was whether or not the legendary Nick Saban would return to coaching.

Of course, it all started after analyst Greg McElroy stated, "a very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for... they seem to think Nick Saban’s not done coaching," during Monday's episode of "McElroy & Cubelic in the Morning."

The possibility took over many conversations throughout the day, and later on during an appearance on "3 Man Front," McElroy revealed that after asking analyst Paul Finebaum about the subject, the conclusion was clear.

"Paul's connected, I'll ask him on the show on Monday," McElroy said. "So I asked him point blank, 'I was like Paul, I wouldn't ask the question if it weren't a couple of people I trust and respect that seem to think this is a possibility,' and Paul and I both kind of laughed like, no, absolutely not. I don't see it as a likelihood. Like he's completely content doing what he's doing."

Of course, it now appears unlikely, but there's no doubt that a Saban return would be exciting news for whichever team or program brought him in.

Throughout his 28 years as a college football head coach, he established himself as one of the all-time greats, compiling a 297-71-1 record, going 19-12 in bowl games and winning seven national championships.

Six of those would come during his 17 years with the Alabama Crimson Tide, where he's still involved since retiring following the 2023 season, and has been seen meeting recruits during visits.

Now, time will tell if Saban is truly content with his analyst role for ESPN's "College GameDay" and minimal duties with the Crimson Tide, or if the 73-year-old surprises everyone and comes back to coaching.
