Olympique Lyonnais have made a surprise approach for Atlético Madrid’s Thomas Lemar, according to a report from Sacha Tavolieri. The 28-year-old France international has fallen completely out of Diego Simeone’s plans and has not featured competitively for Los Colchoneros since September 2023, due to both injury and form.

Lemar, under contract with Atlético until 2027, has been made available for transfer, and OL tentatively explored a loan deal to bring him back to Ligue 1 this summer. However, Sacha Tavolieri reports that Lemar’s salary – estimated well above €400,000 per month – is far beyond what Lyon can accommodate, even temporarily. The player has also expressed a preference to remain in Spain, where several La Liga clubs are monitoring his situation, with a view to offering him more regular playing time.Yet under new president Michele Kang, OL must strictly adhere to an internal salary cap after the club managed to retain its status in Ligue 1 after initially being relegated to Ligue 2 by the DNCG. GFFN | George Boxall
