Two Ball State baseball standouts selected 17 picks apart in 2025 MLB Draft

Two Ball State baseball players were selected 17 picks apart in the 2025 MLB Draft after both earned all-conference honors this season.

Ball State baseball saw two players selected in the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft on Monday, July 14.

Shortstop Dylan Grego was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 13th round, and pitcher Jacob Hartlaub was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 14th round — 17 picks after Grego was drafted.

"Congrats to Dylan and Jacob on realizing their dreams of being selected in the professional baseball draft," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said in a statement posted by the university. "This adds to Ball State's great tradition of having players go to the next level."

Grego and Hartlaub were Ball State's 77th and 78th players drafted into the MLB in program history, while 2025 marked the 22nd draft in which Ball State had multiple selections.

Grego, a junior out of Kansas City, Mo., was a first-team All-MAC selection batting .376 with a .429 on-base percentage and a .624 slugging percentage. He produced 14 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 55 RBIs, 58 runs and 15 stolen bases, and his 91 hits were the third-most in a single season in program history. Grego was a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award for the nation's top collegiate shortstop.

Hartlaub was named second-team All-MAC after the Cardinals won all 10 of his starts in conference play. The senior out of Milwaukee, Wis., posted a 6-2 record with a 5.09 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. He pitched a team-high 81.1 innings and struck out 69 batters.
