Holy Cross RHP Macchiarola, four Worcester Bravehearts players picked in Major League Baseball Draft

Holy Cross RHP Danny Macchiarola picked by Seattle Mariners; Worcester Bravehearts have four players selected in Major League Baseball Draft.

Danny Macchiarola, who helped Holy Cross capture the Patriot League championship this spring, was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the eighth round, No. 242 overall on Monday, July 14.

The 2025 Major League Baseball Draft concluded July 14, and several players with Central Mass. ties were selected, including former Holy Cross right-handed pitcher Danny Macchiarola and former Worcester Bravehearts players Jordan Gottesman, Jack Martinez, Daniel Bucciero and Jack Goodman.

Macchiarola, who helped Holy Cross capture the Patriot League championship this spring, went to the Seattle Mariners in the eighth round, No. 242 overall.

In the sixth round, with the 176th overall pick, the San Francisco Giants drafted Gottesman, a left-handed pitcher. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Martinez in the eighth round, one spot after Macchiarola, and in the ninth round, the Athletics selected third baseman Bucciero with the 260th overall pick.

The Detroit Tigers drafted Goodman, a shortstop, in the 13th round, No. 399 overall.

In team history, Bravehearts have now had 33 players taken in the MLB Draft.

Macchiarola, who recently concluded his junior season at Holy Cross, was a two-time All-Patriot League second-team honoree. He won his final three starts of the regular season and was dominant in the PL tourney.

Macchiarola struck out a season-high 12 batters in an eight-inning effort against Lehigh in the semifinals and fired a complete-game gem in Game 1 of the PL championship series against Army.

Macchiarola, who recently committed to Miami out of the transfer portal, finished the season 9-5, 3.27. Over his three-year HC career, Macchiarola ranked third in program history in strikeouts with 196.

“I am incredibly proud of Danny and his development during his time here at Holy Cross,” HC coach Ed Kahovec said. “He has been a model student-athlete and helped us bring the Patriot League championship back to Worcester. Now, it’s time for him to take his championship caliber character to the professional ranks.”

Macchiarola is the first MLB Draft pick out of Holy Cross since Declan Cronin in 2019. Macchiarola is the highest HC pick since the Toronto Blue Jays selected Dave Stenhouse in the fifth round of the 1982 draft.

Gottesman, who began his collegiate career at Endicott, where he was the 2024 Commonwealth Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, played a graduate season this year at Northeastern and helped the Huskies to the CAA title and an NCAA Regional berth.

Gottesman went 9-2 with a 2.27 ERA, 97 strikeouts and 17 walks for Northeastern.

Martinez, a right-handed pitcher began his collegiate career at Trinity (Texas), where he played two seasons, before helping Louisiana-Lafayette to an NCAA berth in 2024. He played this season at Arizona State, going 6-4 with a 5.47 ERA in 15 starts. The Sun Devils earned an NCAA appearance.

Bucciero had an outstanding junior season at Fordham. The only Ram to start all 58 games, Bucciero batted a career-best .320 and established career highs in numerous offensive categories.

Bucciero became just the second Fordham player to reach 125 runs, 40 doubles, 20 home runs, 100 RBIs and 60 stolen bases in their careers.

Goodman, along with Gottesman, helped Northeastern to a historic season. The Huskies’ 49 wins were a program and CAA record.

Goodman had a terrific junior season, batting .335 with 10 homers and 51 RBIs. He earned All-CAA first-team honors.
