Cam Newton hasn’t stepped foot onto an NFL field since 2021, but fans remember what defenses had to do just to slow him down. The former Auburn Tigers quarterback and 2015 Associated Press NFL MVP recently weighed in on his ability to talk smack, as well.

Newton watched a clip of Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson bantering over who was better at, well, bantering.

“I’m the best trash talker in sports in general,” Johnson said in that video. “I went way past just talking. I talked to the media, I talked to you in your face, I send your team gifts, I send you presents. There’s levels to trash talk. I just sent stuff to people’s houses.”

Still, Newton doesn’t believe Johnson, who would be in the Hall of Fame for antics if there were one, is the best at the verbal craft. At least not better than Newton is, even if Johnson sent defensive backs Pepto-Bismol.

“He ain’t foolin’ with me,” Newton said. “Let me tell you something. Man, I’d say something, Ocho, to make your kids hate me. … I’m not saying that I’m the best. I’m just saying you don’t wanna get into a confrontation with me.

“When it comes to putting these nouns and verbs — you know what I’m saying — putting it together, it comes down to just being witty.”

Newton revealed what made his instigating skills different from other players.

“They would’ve hated me, because I’m gonna get personal. You feel what I’m saying?” Newton said. “I don’t fight fair. I don’t talk fair. But it’s some truth behind everything that I say — and that’s where I’m willing to go. I ain’t gonna tell you no lie. So if you come barking up Boogie’s tree, you better understand, you better be equipped.”
