Following in Walter Clayton Jr.'s footsteps, a heralded transfer talent is officially the next Gator hooper to don the famous uno.

The Florida Gators have a new No. 1. And if you're at all familiar with the standards in Gainesville across any number of sports, you know that doesn't exactly come with modest expectations.

This hasn't been so true for Gatormen's basketball as it is here and now after so recently capping off 2024-25 with a third NCAA national championship in program history.

Looking ahead to next season, then, it was more than clear that whoever was poised to inherit the jersey that Utah Jazz first-round NBA Draft pick Walter Clayton Jr. wore to First Team All-American and Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors would be receiving a pretty serious vote of confidence from coach Todd Golden and Co. regarding what's to come.

Fortunately, a newly arrived playmaker who attracted major attention in the transfer portal opted to take his talents to Gainesville more than ready to answer that call.

On Monday, the Gators officially confirmed their jersey numbers for what fans will hope is the second successful title defense in program history -- and former Princeton Tiger Xaivian Lee is the Orange and Blue's newest No. 1.

Lee, a native of Toronto, did not emerge from Pennsylvania's Perkiomen School -- where he was notably teammates with prolific Gator forward Thomas Haugh -- with much fanfare on high major recruiting boards.

That was merely motivation.

After averaging just 13.3 minutes per game for the Tigers as a freshman, the 6-foot-4 court general stuffed the stat sheet the next two seasons, logging a career-best 17.1 points per contest as a sophomore and reaching his best marks in rebounds (6.1 per game), assists (5.5), and steals (1.2) last season as a junior.

He rolls into Gator Country coming off two consecutive First Team All-Ivy League honors and a year of eligibility remaining.

Florida posted a handsome 36-4 record last season, navigating what was widely called the most challenging, skilled Southeastern Conference gauntlet in league history, snatching the SEC Tournament championship on March 16. They earned a No. 1 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament, mounting multiple dramatic comebacks to claim the national championship trophy against Houston on April 7 in San Antonio.

Now, a new No. 1 gets to help the Gator Boys stay No. 1.
