The Golden State Warriors have been one of the more active teams exploring veteran additions this offseason. After a season that ended with a second-round exit to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the franchise has made no secret about its desire to land an experienced big man to pair with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.

Despite his age, veteran Al Horford has been heavily considered as the perfect fit among the few available big men in the market. Horford, 39, is a proven player who could bring size and championship poise to a Golden State team desperately in need of a stalwart center.

While the Warriors have been widely viewed as the frontrunner for Horford, his future remains uncertain. His name has consistently popped up in free agency discussions, with other teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Atlanta Hawks all rumored to have checked in. However, as the days go by, his next move — or whether he’ll hang up his sneakers for good — has remained a hot topic.

On Monday, ESPN’s Marc Spears shared an update that suggests Horford’s decision could drag on longer than expected:

“Golden State expected him to sign last week — he didn’t,” Spears reported.

He added that the Lakers, Milwaukee, and Atlanta remain interested and confirmed that retirement is still firmly on the table for the five-time All-Star.

Spears also noted that Horford isn’t rushing a decision and that his family — including his 10-year-old son — will play a major role in what comes next. Considering Horford to Golden State was considered an inevitability by many reports, this update is a good one for teams like the Lakers who may still have a real chance at landing the veteran big.

Horford averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists last season, providing the Boston Celtics with steady defense and smart floor spacing. A potential move to Golden State would give the Warriors exactly the type of low-maintenance veteran presence they lack down low.
