Brady Counsell, the son of former Brewers player and manager Craig Counsell, was taken in the 10th round of the MLB Draft.
The 10th round of the Major League Baseball Draft on July 14 yielded a pretty familiar name to Milwaukee Brewers fans.
Brady Counsell, an alumnus of Whitefish Bay High School who finished his college career at Kansas, was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks, taken at No. 303 overall.
Counsell's father, Craig, also went to Whitefish Bay and played for the Brewers over two stints, first in 2004 and then again from 2007 through 2011. He also happens to be the winningest manager in franchise history, serving as skipper from 2015 through 2023.
He now manages the Chicago Cubs. To the eternal chagrin of most Brewers fans.
Craig Counsell also played for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2000-03, where he won National League Championship Series MVP in 2003 before the Diamondbacks went on to win the World Series in dramatic fashion. With the game on the line in the ninth inning of Game 7 in the World Series against the Yankees, Counsell was hit by a pitch one batter before Luis Gonzalez won the game with a bloop single.
Brady played for the same high-school program as Mitchell Voit, who attended Michigan and was selected No. 38 in the draft by the New York Mets. It may not be the Corona, California, team that had three draft picks in the top 32 picks (including Brewers pick Brady Ebel), but it's not bad.
The 6-foot-3 Brady Counsell attended Minnesota out of high school and spent three years with the Gophers. With Kansas last year, he had a .259 batting average in 60 games with 12 homers and 11 doubles. He also won the NCAA Division I Gold Glove, as presented by Rawlings, at third base.
Counsell, 22, was taken as a shortstop, and his pick has a slot value of $189,800.
