The Creighton Blue Jays hired Alan Huss to be the successor for Greg McDermott, but there was no timeline for his retirement. Now, his timeline has been revealed and it is sooner than later.
The Creighton Bluejays have been one of the top basketball programs in the Big East under Greg McDermott’s leadership. Now, McDermott’s time is nearing its end, as the Bluejays announced back in April that they’ve hired High Point’s Alan Huss as both an assistant coach and his eventual successor.
“The transition plan at Creighton is in effect. Alan Huss is leaving High Point to head back to the Blue Jays and be the head coach-in-waiting whenever Greg McDermott retires,” said John Fanta. “Greg McDermott is an outstanding coach and an even better human. He’s one of the most beloved figures in college basketball. What he’s built at Creighton, transitioning the program to the Big East and making them a perennial contender, is special. This transition plan with Huss is really well done, IMO.”
While the move clearly signaled that McDermott’s retirement was on the horizon, there was no timeline when the announcement was first made. Now, just a few months later, McDermott has provided some clarity on how much longer he plans to coach.
“Greg McDermott tells me that he plans to coach at Creighton for 2-3 more years before retiring and handing it off to Alan Huss,” CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein posted.
McDermott hasn’t slowed down in the transfer portal. He landed a major recruiting win by securing Iowa standouts Owen Freeman and Josh Dix—two players who played a key role in the Hawkeyes’ success last season. This duo is expected to make a significant impact in Omaha.
With McDermott’s consistent track record of NCAA Tournament appearances, the expectations remain high heading into his final seasons. The early arrival of Huss on staff is a strategic move, allowing him to build relationships with players and recruits while learning McDermott’s system.
