LSU's Brian Kelly has lofty goals with Garrett Nussmeier

The LSU Tigers got Garrett Nussmeier back even though he could've gone pro or exited through the transfer portal. This is because, in head coach Brian Kelly's eyes, he can and wants to win a championship with the team.

Given the lackluster status of the 2025 NFL quarterback class, there's a pretty good chance that Garrett Nussmeier could've gone in the first round like Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart. However, despite that option, he declined, returning to college for the 2025 season. Doubling down, he also returned to LSU rather than hitting the portal like so many veteran QBs do.

This is because, according to head coach Brian Kelly, they want to win a national championship together. "Let's start with my reaction. I was pretty happy [he came back]," Kelly said on the SEC Network. "The team knew that Garrett Nussmeier, we can win a championship with him as our quarterback... He knows that sometimes, this is about patience. This is about developing. This is about having some setbacks."

Kelly went on to say that the hardships the QB faced in 2024 are "the best teacher" for Nussmeier to evolve and get better for 2025 and beyond. "We knew when that kid decided that he was coming back, he was being true to who he is. And that is a coach's son that's seen the game, that knows the game, that it's not just about what the stats are. He came back because he wants to win a championship," the coach concluded.

LSU is currently +1700 per FanDuel to win a national title. They're behind Notre Dame, Clemson, Oregon, Alabama, Penn State, Georgia, Ohio State, and Texas in that order.
