The Boston Red Sox have had some incredible managers throughout their history, especially in the 2000s. One of the most noteworthy and exceptional managers is fan favorite and franchise legend Terry Francona.
After taking the 2024 season off, Francona is back as a manager, this time with the Cincinnati Reds. In the final game before the All-Star break, Francona reached an incredible milestone in his managerial career.
As referenced by the Associated Press, Francona, in his win over the Colorado Rockies, not only secured his 50th win as Reds manager, but his 2,000th win in his MLB managerial career, the 13th manager to do so.
"I don't think I've ever tried to delude myself," Francona said. "I mean, some of those names up there are kind of like baseball royalty. If there's an adjective for baseball lifer, it's me. I'm not overly smart. ... I just love the game, probably too much."
Across his illustrious 24-year career as a manager in the Majors, Francona spent the bulk of his time in Cleveland (11 years). But, where he was at his best, was with the Red Sox.
He managed the legendary 2004 Red Sox team, which not only broke the curse but had one of the greatest comebacks in professional sports history over the New York Yankees, coming back from down 3-0 in the series.
In his eight years in Boston, from 2004 to 2011, Francona had a .574 winning percentage with 744 total wins. He also led the Red Sox to two World Series championships.
The Red Sox legend has been around various teams in his career, but he's had the most success in Boston. Francona is a baseball icon and will likely have a spot in the Hall of Fame once he decides to retire.
Reaching 2,000 wins will only help his candidacy, as the fan favorite manager has the accolades that are more than deserving of a spot in the Hall of Fame.
