Edimilson Fernandes’ permanent departure from the Bundesliga has been officially confirmed. Mainz 05 have completed the sale of 29-year-old defensive specialist to BSC Young Boys in Bern.

Fernandes featured 91 times in the league for Mainz and made seven top flight appearances during a 2021/22 loan stint with Bielefeld. The former West Ham United man came agonizingly close to cracking 100 Bundesliga appearances.

It nevertheless never really remained realistic that Fernandes could carry on with Mainz. This despite the fact that he did well during his recent loan stint with Stade Brest and maintained an estimated market value of €3m.

Both clubs agreed not to divulge the transfer fee, but transfermarkt.de lists Fernandes as a €500,000 sale. Mainz evidently sold a player on an expiring contract for a paltry fee after Fernandes directly handed in a transfer request.

Fernandes signed a four-year-deal with his new club.

After his successful loan spell last season, Edimilson approached us with the wish to join BSC Young Boys on a permanent basis,” Mainz sporting CEO Christian Heidel noted in a club statement. “We have complied with this request, thank him very much for his commitment to Mainz 05, and wish him all the best at his new sporting home in his native Switzerland.

I know that this is a very ambitious environment that wants to build on the successes of recent years,” the player himself added of his move to the third-place finishes in last year’s Swiss Super League. “I am very excited to take on this challenge.”
