EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – UTEP quarterback Cade McConnell held his second annual passing and skills camp for the youth on Saturday at Canutillo High School.

Other current Miners were also in attendance to serve as coaches and guide campers to assist with camps cause. While helping young athletes improve their skills in the game of football, helping them grow off the field is just as import to McConnell.

Headed into his 4th year with UTEP, El Paso has become a home away from home for this California native. Giving back to a place that has become so special was a no brainer for this UTEP quarterback.

“This city has shown me so much love and compassion, to come out and give back to the next generation is just my way of giving that love back to the city,” said McConnell. “If I can give back an ounce of what El Paso has shown me, that’s a win for me. I hope that when these kids come out here, they understood that yes, we play at the Division one level – but we’re nothing but big kids that love to play football and happen to get pretty good at it. We’re out here having fun just like them. We had a chance to live our dream. I hope that all these kids saw, hey, my dream is right there too.

Our presenting sponsor, School Yard Sports, as well as Anytime Fitness, AJAX and ShirtsPlus as well. Everybody came together to make something special happen for these kids and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

“It’s a lot of encouragement,” said Julius Banuelos, a camp participant. “It definitely made me very happy. It’s going to help push me through the rest of my high school year. Even though I just met him [McConnell] and didn’t even know him he made it comfortable and I was able to get better at my skills. Just his energy kept me up a lot. It made me realize that you have UTEP people – not just UTEP people but all college people – they’re fun, nice people, even out of football. They help a lot of young kids.”

Now that year two is in the books, McConnell, coaches and participants now turn their attention to the upcoming football season just around the corner.
