The Denver Nuggets have been one of the most active teams during this offseason. Major changes began way before their season ended, when they chose to fire championship-winning head coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth right before the start of the NBA Playoffs.

The moves shocked the NBA, as many believed the Nuggets were punting on any sort of postseason run by firing Malone. In his place, David Adelman took over in an interim role and held his own. The Nuggets defeated the then-red-hot Los Angeles Clippers in seven games, despite the Nuggets having arguably the better roster top to bottom.

Nuggets’ Cam Johnson shares emphatic opinion of offseason trade

While the Nuggets went on to lose their second-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, they did push them to seven games, showing that they were just a significant move or two away from competing for the Western Conference going forward, especially with the injuries that started to pile up down the stretch.

The first significant move came when the Nuggets executed a trade that sent Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 unprotected first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cameron Johnson. The trade gets the Nuggets off Porter Jr.’s massive contract and allows more financial flexibility in the future. Porter Jr.’s shoulder injury hampered his shooting ability dramatically in the playoffs.

In the NBA 2K Summer League, Johnson was asked about the trade and what he’s most excited about going to Denver.

“The guys on the team, the culture that they’ve created, the winning identity that they’ve created,” Johnson said. “Everybody that I’ve met so far has been amazing, so I’m really looking forward to it.

“I just want to win. I’ll try and be in the right spots every time, make the right play… there’s going to be a lot of open shots out there and we’re going to generate them for each other.”

Johnson was then asked what comes to mind being able to play with Nikola Jokic.

“It’s a dream come true,” Johnson said. “For me as a shooter, all I know is that if I’m in the right spot, he’ll find me. I think he’s the heartbeat of the team. He’s the stabilizing factor and does a great job of that.”

Johnson averaged a career-high 18.8 points per game on a career-best 47.5% field goal percentage. He’s a 39.2% career shooter from beyond the arc and offers a lot of what Porter Jr. brought to the table.

The Nuggets stayed busy when they added former Nuggets guard Bruce Brown and traded for Jonas Valanciunas, so this Nuggets team should have quite a different look come next season
