Right-handed starting pitcher Shane Bieber has appeared in seven MLB seasons since making his debut with the Cleveland Guardians in 2018.
Selected by Cleveland in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft, he quickly established himself as one of baseball’s best pitchers.
He made his first of two All-Star appearances in 2019—his second came in 2021—during his first full major-league season, which also saw him finish fourth in Cy Young Award voting.
Bieber’s best year arrived in 2020, when he earned the American League Cy Young Award, led the league with a 1.63 ERA and 122 strikeouts. He also finished fourth in MVP voting that season.
In 2024, he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery, ending his season after just two starts. During his recovery this year, elbow soreness forced a week-long shutdown from throwing.
Before Sunday’s series finale against the Chicago White Sox, the Guardians announced that Bieber is slated to make a rehab start on Tuesday in the Arizona Complex League. It will be his first outing since suffering the setback last month.

Over 134 career starts in Cleveland, Bieber has compiled a 62–32 record, a 3.22 ERA and 958 strikeouts.
With the Guardians sitting at 45–49—4.5 games back of the third American League wild-card spot and on the outside looking in—the Guardians will rely on Bieber’s second half return to ignite a playoff push after being eliminated in the ALCS last year.
