Mike McGrath broke the news for The Telegraph this weekend that Andre Onana has suffered a hamstring injury, with early assessments suggesting the player is set to miss six-to-eight weeks of action.

That timeline would put Onana out until somewhere between August 23rd and September 6th, with Arsenal travelling to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on August 17th.

Alex Crook of talkSPORT confirms that Onana is set to be out for six weeks. But these are early assessments, and it’s not impossible the goalkeeper could make it back ahead of schedule.

As it stands, Altay Bayindir would be the most likely player to take Onana’s place in goal against Arsenal on the opening day of the season. United also have Tom Heaton and Radek Vitek as alternative options, depending on how pre-season goes.

But McGrath suggests United could look to sign another goalkeeper in the wake of Onana’s injury, following links to Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez earlier in the summer.

The journalist adds that the Martinez deal isn’t currently being worked on, due to the significant valuation gap between the two clubs. United have also reportedly looked at Senne Lammens of Antwerp.

Onana would be United’s second player to be ruled out of the Arsenal game, with Lisandro Martinez also still sidelined. Mikel Arteta’s side will be without Gabriel Jesus for the encounter, but the hope is that everyone else will be fit by August.
