Former Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar, who now plays for Bayer Leverkusen, appears to be on the move once again.

The Czech keeper joined the Red Devils in 2018 and stayed five years at Old Trafford.

Life after United

He enjoyed loan spells at Swindon Town and Burton Albion before moving to Bayer Leverkusen in 2023.

Kovar impressed last year as he was involved in 17 games in total and played an active role in his side’s run to the Europa League final.

The 25 year old also played 15 matches this season as back-up keeper.

PSV Eindhoven interest

It was reported at the start of the month that Kovar was on the verge of leaving Bayer Leverkusen.

His exit once again coincides with the arrival of Erik ten Hag, the manager in charge of United when he departed in 2023.

German reporter Florian Plettenberg has posted on X that the Czech has almost sealed his exit from Leverkusen.

He reported, “all done between Leverkusen, Eindhoven and Matej Kovar. Medical completed.”

The fee will be “€5m fee + €2m in bonuses, with a sell-on clause included”.

Plettenberg claims that “Eindhoven are now waiting for the official green light from Manchester United to allow Leverkusen to complete the transfer with PSV, as United have a matching right.”

Ruben Amorim’s side are not expected to get involved however, and as a result the deal is expected to be completed tomorrow.

United’s keeping crisis

The Red Devils’ pre-season preparations have been thrown into chaos as Andre Onana has picked up an injury that will likely see him miss numerous matches in July and August.

According to reports, United were already searching for a keeper and have been linked to John Victor and Senne Lammens as potential targets.

Fans may have been speculating on whether the Red Devils would exercise their buy-back option on their former keeper but it seems that this is off the agenda.

Kovar has already spoken on a potential return to United in the past and he claimed that it would “be nice” to make a return to Old Trafford.
