Upper Arlington's Hayden Hollingsworth voted central Ohio girls athlete of the year

The swimming star won her 3rd consecutive 50 free championship, was state runner-up in the 100 fly and anchored the first-place 200 free relay.

Upper Arlington swimmer Hayden Hollingsworth was selected by Dispatch.com readers as the central Ohio girls athlete of the year in the 2024-25 school year.

Hollingsworth won her third consecutive Division I 50 free championship, was state runner-up in the 100 fly and anchored the first-place 200 free relay as UA won its third straight team championship. Hollingsworth, who has signed with Georgia, also was on the first-place 200 medley relay.

She received 63.4% of the vote, followed by Grandview Heights swimmer Carrie Furbee, who received 22.5%, Olentangy Orange track and field and cross country athlete Brooke Chapman (6%) and Fairfield Union three-sport standout Christian Thompson (2.1%).

Furbee, the runner-up, won the last of her five Division II state championships, setting a state record of 53.36 in the 100 butterfly. Furbee won state in the 50 and 100 freestyle as a sophomore and junior and swept district in those events each of her first three high school seasons.

Chapman repeated as champion in the 1,600-meters at the Division I state track and field meet after winning district and regional titles in the event. In the fall, she was Division I state cross-country runner-up to cap a postseason that also included district and regional championships. Chapman finished 13th in the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships in December.

Thompson was Division II state champion in the high jump in just her second year of track and field and also guided the basketball team to a 27-0 start and its first state tournament in 26 years. Thompson was first-team all-state in both basketball and volleyball, the sport she was to play at Ohio University before deciding to sign with Ohio State in track. Thompson was state runner-up in the high jump as a junior.

Also nominated were Hilliard Davidson's Lilly LaRosa, Olentangy Liberty's Madeline Pohmer, Bexley's Amiya Bowles and Lancaster's Ashlin Mowery.
