(WJHL) – Three of the Appalachian League’s five contests were decided by one run or fewer on Saturday night.

In Elizabethton, the River Riders rallied late, but came up short against the River Turtles, 8-7.

A five-run eighth inning from the home team leveled the contest, but the visitors got an RBI double in the ninth to seal the victory.

Jack Ratcliffe led the way for the River Riders with a trio of RBI, while Pulaski’s Kennedy Drexler notched four RBI in the win.

The Doughboys, decked out in their special SpongeBob uniforms, won a tiebreaker over the Coal Cats to get back in the win column, 8-8.

Dane Morrow (Tennessee) paced the home team with a pair of RBI on the night, while Landon Smelser (Science Hill/Tennessee Tech) also added an RBI and two runs scored.

Reid Brosnan (Georgia Tech/ETSU) earned a no-decision in the start for JC, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters.

In a battle of first-place squads, Bluefield took out Kingsport, 7-3.

The Ridge Runners scored three in the first inning, and then a tally each in the eighth and ninth frames to secure the win.

Paul Jones II supplied a solo homer for Kingsport in the loss, although the Axmen were held to just five hits on the night.
