The Miami Heat's Norman Powell will accept an interesting new role.
Heat’s Norman Powell Makes Eye-Opening Tyler Herro Statement Following 3-Team Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Miami Heat acquired fringe All-Star scorer and ex-Los Angeles Clippers guard Norman Powell through a blockbuster 3-team deal including the Clippers and Utah Jazz on Monday.
The 21.8-point scorer and 2019 NBA champion as a former member of the Toronto Raptors will aim to provide the Heat with blisteringly efficient offense from a variety of spots on the floor.
Specifically, the 32-year-old veteran will look to personally support the franchise's blossoming combo-guard and first-time All-Star Tyler Herro, who received plenty of attention from opposing defenses in 2024-25.
With Herro preparing for another All-Star caliber year and Powell being gifted a unique opportunity to compete for a top seed in the Eastern Conference, Powell declared that he'd take a backseat to the Heat's rising star during his introductory press conference on Wednesday.
"Tyler Herro is great off the ball, on the ball, scoring, facilitating," Powell told media members Wednesday, according to Miami Herald's Barry Jackson.
"He did a great job this year of getting teammates involved and figuring out when to score, when to be aggressive."
When asked of his potential fit with the Heat, the former Sixth Man of the Year candidate made it clear that his role would be to ease the offensive burden thrust upon Herro.
"I want to make it easy for Tyler. He was the focal point last year, had a lot of attention on him."
Herro authored a magical season for the Heat in 2024-25, contributing 23.9 points, 5.5 assists and 5.2 rebounds while connecting on 37.5% of his 8.7 attempts from three-point range in 77 contests.
The Heat's lone representative at the 2025 NBA All-Star Game will receive more attention than ever from opposing teams this coming season, and Powell wants to be the one responsible for shouldering more of the scoring load.
In 60 games for the Clippers last season, the explosive 6-foot-3 sharpshooter averaged a career-best 21.8 points and knocked down a ridiculous 41.8% of his 7.1 chances from distance, proving to remain one of the best pure shooters in the NBA.
The Miami Heat may end up being a dark-horse title contender by the conclusion of the 2025-26 regular season, and Powell's knack for outside shot-making and off-ball scoring could prove to be massive part of the team's hopeful success.
