Ko Itakura’s Borussia Mönchengladbach release clause expires amid declining interest

Florian Plettenberg reports that Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Ko Itakura’s contractual release clause has expired. Declining interest in the Japanese international from his primary Bundesliga suitor, Eintracht Frankfurt, left Gladbach without a steady negotiation partner as the clock ticked down. What happens with the 28-year-old now is unclear.

Plettenberg reports that PSV Eindhoven have remerged as potential suitors for Itakura. Borussia Dortmund have also been linked with the 37-times-capped Samurai international as well. It’s been repeatedly reported that the Niederrheiner wish to generate some inlays by selling their €12m-valued player before pursuing their own summer purchases.

The latest news nevertheless throws this notion too in doubt. Roland Virkus and the BMG administrative team may wish to retain Itakura’s services ahead of the coming campaign, possibly even persuading him to extend his current contract set to expire at the end of next season.

In any event, should no solution be found for Itakura before the summer transfer window closes, Gladbach risk losing their high-valued player on a free. Should Itakura not opt to extend, he will be permitted to negotiate free transfers when the next window opens on January 1st, 2025.
