ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – With flooding dealing another devastating blow to the future of the Ruidoso Downs racetrack, the racino’s signature event will be held in Albuquerque once again.

Ruidoso Downs handler recounts saving horses’ lives during historic flooding

Albuquerque Downs racetrack president told KRQE News 13 on Friday that they’re glad to step in to help a second year in a row. Tuesday’s storm swamped the Ruidoso Downs infield with more than ten feet of water, closing that racetrack for the season. “They were devastated. I talked to the management there, and they were devastated, but you know the show must go on,” said Don Cook, President of the Albuquerque Downs.

Hit with historic and catastrophic flooding for a second year in a row, just weeks away from their biggest race of the year, the Ruidoso Downs Racetrack and Casino is moving the All American Futurity races to Albuquerque once again. “It’s totally unbelievable this has happened back-to-back years,” said Cook.

“We’re excited to help them, not under the best circumstances, but we’re excited to pull it off,” said Cook.

Trials for the $1 million All American Futurity are just three weeks away. Last year, the Albuquerque Downs only had five days to prepare. This time around, with more prep time, they’re feeling confident. “You know, I leave my track open almost all year round, so the racing surface is ready to go. It’s more of getting the help here, you know, a month early. Contacting my racing officials and get them to come in a month early,” said Cook.

Cook said they’re expecting 500 racehorses, but said the New Mexico State Fairgrounds is also helping by providing extra stalls. The Downs has already begun prepping Albuquerque’s stalls for the incoming racehorses, while some have already arrived. Cook says while he’s honored to help, he hopes Ruidoso will be back on their feet soon. “Just hang in there and you know, in God’s hands a lot of times, and hopefully next year they get back on track,” said Cook.

Cook said 8,000 people attended last year’s All American Futurity in Albuquerque. They’re preparing to potentially see a bigger crowd this year. The Downs said it is already seeing high demand for reservations to watch the races.
