The Tigers could finally solve their third baseman problem at the end of this month.
It's no secret that the Detroit Tigers are, at least record-wise, the best team in Major League Baseball right now.
And with the reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal looking to be in his same form as last year, the playoff hopes for the Motor City baseball team are looking bright and high.
But even the Tigers have their shopping list for the trade deadline, at the top of that list is a third baseman.
Riley Greene, Javier Baez, and Gleyber Torres were all selected as starters to the 2025 MLB All-Star Game, and Spencer Torkelson as well as Zach McKinstry have shown that they belong on the diamond for the Tigers' starting nine.
But the Detroit third baseman have been the weak link on the team thus far in 2025, with the position batting an on-base plus slugging of .645 on the season, with their 77 hits the ninth fewest in the majors.
Fortunately for the team, the solution to their dilemma could be sitting up in the American League East in Fenway Park, with Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman.
Bregman, who was recently named to his third career All-Star Game, joined the Red Sox after spending the first nine years of his career with the Houston Astros, winning the 2017 and 2022 World Series with the team and finishing runner-up to Mike Trout in AL MVP voting in 2019.
Detroit was in the running for the star corner infielder over the offseason before Bregman signed his three-year deal with Boston worth $120 million.
Between Bregman's championship pedigree and relationship with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, Detroit grabbing one of the best third basemen in the league would solidify them as favorites to at least represent the American League in the Fall Classic.
