Port Vale Fans Verdict: Off The Mark

Despite Saturday’s positive result, the fans weren’t fully convinced by the performance.

There are two ways to look at Saturday’s victory over Port Vale, our first of the league campaign.

One is that a win is a win and how we got there doesn’t really matter; the result is paramount. The other viewpoint is that, regardless of the points, it was another performance that lacked fluidity and coherence, which should be a concern.

I’m not sure which side of that argument I sit on at the moment. Ultimately though, we got the win, which was desperately needed. Here’s how the fans reacted to the game…

A peach from Paddy

In yet another game void of much attacking quality, rhythm or knowhow, again it took a stunner for us to get the ball in the back of the net.

And can I just shock you? It wasn’t from the boot of Lewis Wing, but Paddy Lane. It’s the first time we’ve really been able to see a glimpse of his quality, but my word, what a way to do it.

The fans certainly enjoyed the strike…

A league win at last

Performances, tactics and personnel aside, we were fast approaching ‘we just need a ruddy win’ territory – if we weren’t already in it. And the be all and end all, after 90 minutes, is that we were three points off than we were when the afternoon began, and that’s something to work with.

How we got there will be debated and discussed, but there are some fans who are just happy for the win, and that’s that…

Papering over the cracks?

While the result was the main thing for some fans, others again questioned the performance as a whole. It was a showing with familiar bugbears and issues, but this time we just happened to be on the winning side.

Whether these issues will be remedied over time obviously remains to be seen, but there are more than a few who are questioning whether there is a positive way forward continuing to play in this way…

Conclusion

We’re all glad for the win, of course we are. If nothing else it gives us a platform to build on, and the habit of being able to pick up results when not playing to your best is a good one to have – no doubt about it.

But, and it is a big but, continuing playing the way we’re playing and getting wins regularly isn’t sustainable. Improvements still need to be made, and I think that’s evident to everybody.

Time will tell whether Hunt can make those improvements, but at least he has a win under his belt now.
