Colorado Rockies game no. 137 thread: Matthew Boyd vs. Tanner Gordon

Can the Rockies hand the Cubs an L?

The Colorado Rockies have attempted two comebacks against the Chicago Cubs, and have fallen short both times. On Friday night, they were down 9-2 after a six-run fifth, but they fought back a few runs at a time in the later innings and ultimately lost 11-7. Last night, they were knotted 1-1 early but then the Cubs scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to put them up 4-1. The Rockies scored two more in the bottom of the sixth, but they still fell one run short of victory. They will have one more chance today, and perhaps they can complete a comeback and fly a W themselves.

Tanner Gordon (5-5, 6.44 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies, making his 11th start of the season. In his last outing against the Houston Astros, Gordon tossed six innings while allowing just one run on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts en route to a 6-1 Rockies victory. He has won each of his last three starts against the Astros, Dodgers and Diamondbacks. Gordon is the first pitcher to win three straight in 2025, and could become the first pitcher to win four straight since Austin Gomber in 2023. His five wins lead the club. Gordon has faced the Cubs once before on May 28. The Champaign, IL native tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on six hits with just one strikeout. The Cubs won that game 2-1.

Gordon will face Cubs’ veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd (12-7, 2.82 ERA). The 34-year-old was signed by the Cubs as a free agent in the offseason. He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB Draft and made his MLB debut with the organization on June 27, 2015. However, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers alongside two other southpaws for David Price at the deadline that year. Boyd then spent the next six and a half seasons with the Tigers before bouncing between the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Tigers again, and Cleveland Guardians. He had Tommy John surgery in June 2023 and made his way back in August 2024. Boyd has only faced the Rockies once in his career earlier — the same May 28 game against Tanner Gordon — and tossed six innings while allowing just one unearned run on four hits with eight strikeouts.
