Bayern Munich will take the three points and run…
Die Folgen: Bayern’s 3-2 win over Augsburg (Bavarian Football Works)
Bayern Munich traveled to the WWK Arena to take on FC Augsburg and its new coach — Sando Wagner.
While the game would end 3-2 in favor of Bayern Munich, it was a spirited effort from FC Augsburg, who played with great energy and relentlessness. Let’s get into how it all played with some quick hitters on the match:
- As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI:
- Vincent Kompany has settled into a favored XI…for now. When some of the injured starters eventually return, things will change, but until then, this could be the unit we see the most of it.
- Just seconds into the match, Luis Díaz whiffed on an open goal. At some point, the poor execution on finishing is going to be worrisome — and we might be wading into those waters soon.
- FC Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen was very shaky early on. Yikes!
- The home side was definitely more sharp and aggressive under Sandro Wagner. There was an intensity to the team’s play that was very evident from the outset.
- Bayern Munich looked like a team that has relied heavily on the same 10 field players three times in the last eight days. Even though Kompany rotated some in the DFB-Pokal match on Wednesday, he still needed many of his started to contribute. Bayern Munich looked a it weary.
- In the 16th minute a quick counter from Bayern Munich allowed Michael Olise to find Díaz, but the Colombian star could not get enough bend on his shot to put it in the net. It was not an easy chance for the winger, but it was a good look.
- In the 28th minute, a quick counterattack from Bayern Munich resulted in a much needed goal. Upamecano unleashed a nice outlet pass to Laimer who turned it over to the attacking group. The ball eventually made its way to Kane, who sent in a splendid diagonal cross, which found the head of a streaking Serge Gnabry for a 1-0 lead. At first, it was difficult to see who scored because Laimer made the same run as Gnabry and was in the same area, but “The Chef” cooked up the score.
- The Gnabry redemption arc is in play, eh? He might do just enough to get another deal from Bayern Munich.
- The goal did not zap the energy from FC Augsburg, but it did seem to heighten Bayern Munich’s focus, which made life very difficult for Wagner’s squad.
- Just before halftime, Díaz made up for his previous miss, but putting home a perfect cutback pass from Laimer. Terrific run and pass from Laimer and the goal had to feel good for Díaz, who has had a penchant for missing east shots so far this season.
- In the 48th minute, Kane clipped a pass to Olise, who did some dancing before beating Dahmen. It was a terrible shot, but it still counts and the goal put Bayern mUnich in full control with a 3-0 lead.
- In the 51st minute, another sensational pass from Kane found a streaking Laimer (who was just killing FC Augsburg with his runs into the box), but the Austrian blew his cheeky flick by hitting Dahmen’s head.
- Wagner’s team answered right back with a goal from Kristijan Jakić. On the play, all four members of the Bayern Munich players somehow contributed to the breakdown. It was actually kind of impressive for all four to play a hand in giving up the score, but teamwork makes the dream work!
- That goal set off a period where Bayern Munich lacked focus and urgency. It was very similar to how Bayern Munich played when being up 2-0 against SV Wehen Wiesbaden. It was almost as if someone hit the “off” button for the squad.
- FC Augsburg added a second goal at the 76 minute mark as a bad pass from Stanišić led to a misplay from Sacha Boey (who had come on for Laimer), which ultimately led to a shot that evaded both Kimmich and Upamecano, who both should have put a leg on it. Mert Kömür score it for Augsburg. Breakdown City…
- Immediately after, Boey was not reading the room and ran into a ball that he should have just kept. Instead, he airmailed a one-touch attempt.
- No offense intended, but bringing in Boey is a pretty horrible idea under any circumstance. Protecting a lead…trying to come back in a game…getting on the team bus.
- Dahmen made a great 1v1 stop on Olise. That was a massive play for Augsburg.
- Bayern Munich was SCRAMBLING at this point. Social media was probably having a field day with roasting the Bavarians at this point.
- This was not a banner effort for game management from Kompany.
- Díaz had two chances to put the game away in extra time, but just could not get enough on his first attempt and hit a bad shot on the second attempt. Okay, we are entering the trend zone.
- Overall, it was a slow start, followed by a period of dominance, and then a letdown. It was still enough to win and, yes, getting the three points was the most important thing. That will not make some fans happy, but Bayern Munich was, indeed, a bit weary from the heavy schedule. This one was about gutting it out and staying persistent. The Bavarians showed just enough of those traits to go home winners — and that does count for something (and not just in the standings).
