Tyler Glasnow gets zero run support before Arizona took a late lead in the Dodgers’ 6-1 loss to the Dbacks.
The Dodgers shot themselves in the foot when presented with opportunities to score, and it came back to bite as the Diamondbacks shut out the Dodgers for a second straight game by a 6-1 final score.
Tyler Glasnow was looking to pick up his first win since March 31, and he did his part over the first three innings, facing the minimum while keeping Arizona off the bases. The Dodgers got their first baserunner with Will Smith working a two-out walk against Eduardo Rodríguez in the bottom of the first, but Freddie Freeman ended the inning with a line out two pitches later.
Andy Pages gave the Dodgers their first hit with a one-out single in the second inning, but both Alex Call and Kiké Hernández failed to cash in. The Dodgers once again put on a two-out baserunner with a walk in the third, but Rodríguez got the best of Smith to retire the side.
After retiring his first 10 hitters on the night, Glasnow missed on an inside slider to Ketel Marte, hitting him to ruin the perfect game bid. Glasnow recovered to set down the next two hitters before setting down his next four hitters. It was the no. 9 hitter, Ildemaro Vargas, who ruined the no-hit bid by beating the shift on a weak ground ball to the third base side for an infield single in the top of the sixth inning. Glasnow was able to record six shutout innings, but his offense severely let him down.
Freddie Freeman led off the fourth inning with a ringing double down the left field line. It was his 543rd career double, tying him with Tony Gwynn for 36th place in doubles in baseball history. Pages tried to advance Freeman with a weak chopper to Blaze Alexander, but Freeman ran into the Alexander’s glove for a crucial second out. The Dodgers would end the inning leaving the potential first run of the game at first base.
Kiké Hernández and Miguel Rojas each had a pair of hits against Rodriguéz to put both base runners in scoring position with nobody out. Shohei Ohtani hit a fly ball deep to left field enough to score Hernández from third base. The throw from Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was offline, but Hernández didn’t slide into home plate, and Gabriel Moreno barely managed to tag Hernández before he could get his toe on the plate for the double play. Alexander made a diving catch on a line drive from Mookie Betts to end the frame.
Once again, the Dodgers led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of base runners, but Rodríguez struck out Teoscar Hernández before getting Pages to ground into an inning ending double play.
Corbin Carroll needed just one pitch from Glasnow to give Arizona the lead, as he went deep to put the Dbacks ahead by a run to lead off the seventh inning. Gurriel and Alexander each doubled to put both runners in scoring position with nobody out. Moreno was able to plate Gurriel on a sacrifice fly, but the relay throw from Pages kicked off of Kiké Hernández’s glove, rolling near the Dodger dugout and allowing a second run to score on the misplay.
After being held scoreless for 15 straight innings in the series, Mookie Betts finally put the Dodgers on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Vargas brought that run back and two more with a towering three-run shot off of Kirby Yates in the top of the ninth inning to make it a five run Arizona lead.
With the San Diego Padres defeating the Minnesota Twins, the Dodgers’ division lead shrinks back to just one game. With the Philadelphia Phillies walking off the Atlanta Braves, the Dodgers now sit two games behind the no. 2 seed in the National League playoff picture.
