ROLESVILLE — The hype for the Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day at Rolesville (N.C.) High football game had been building all offseason.

Providence Day went 9-3 last year with two of the losses to Rabun Gap (Ga.) Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, including falling 42-39 in the NCISAA 1A state title game. The Chargers won its opener against Philadelphia (Pa.) Roman Catholic 29-28 last week.

Rolesville also competed for the state title last year en route to finishing 14-2. The Rams lost for the second time 35-23 against Greensboro (N.C.) Grimsley in the NCHSAA 4A state title game.

The game

Providence Day took advantage of some self-inflicted Rolesville mistakes and led 31-10 at halftime, and won’t 38-10. The Chargers secondary was impressive and the Rams didn’t have any fluidness offensively. Rolesville ran into the field-goal kicker, which gave PD a first down and eventual touchdown. Rolesville also had an incredible interception at the four-yard line, which set up another touchdown.

NC State targets

NC State has offered several players in the game, with Providence Day junior outside linebacker/safety Tre Geathers and Rolesville junior wide receiver Anthony Roberts leading the way. Geathers will be unofficially visiting Clemson today.

NC State has also offered Rolesville junior free safety Marquis Bryant, junior edge rusher Jayden Broadie and Providence Day junior defensive end Griffin Galloway.

Bryant had a hard hit and covered Clemson wide receiver commit Gordon Sellars on a few plays well. Broadie is coming back from injury and is still finding his niche on the defense.

Potential targets

NC State has evaluated junior safety Caleb Cooper and junior cornerback Moses Poku-Kankam and both played at a high level on defense. Cooper will need to make adjustments if he remains at punt returner.

Cooper, who is from Nashville, Tenn., and played with NC State redshirt freshman nickel Jaren Sensabough, has offers from Boston College, Indiana, Iowa State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Nebraska, Purdue, Southern Methodist, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Southern Mississippi and UNLV.

Poku-Kankam has offers from Boston College, Southern Methodist, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Hampton, Liberty and Miami (Ohio).

Past targets

Both teams had class of 2026 prospects that NC State had offered during the process.

Rolesville featured senior defensive end Zavion Griffin-Haynes and senior linebacker Jayden Griffin-Haynes, and the two brothers have picked North Carolina. Zavion Griffin-Haynes got a few tackles in the backfield, but battled some leg issues.

Providence Day had three former recruiting targets with tackle Leo Delaney (Clemson), wide receiver Sellars (Clemson) and quarterback Zaid Lott (Syracuse). Delaney got injured in the first half.

NC State didn’t offer them, but Rolesville senior wide receiver Gavin Waddell is going to Louisville, and junior running back Amir Brown has picked North Carolina.

Coming up

The Wolfpacker will have stories on Geathers, Cooper and scouting packages from the game in the future.
