The game is underway and Wagner won the toss and elected to receive the ball. Kansas kicker Laith Marjan boots the ball out of the end zone and the first series is to begin.
First Quarter
Wagner goes three and out on the first series and used a hurry-up offense, which is a bit of a surprise. Tate Nagy returned the game’s first punt 20 yards and the Jayhawks started their first series at midfield.
Six plays and 60 yards later Jalon Daniels found Deshawn Hanika on a four-yard TD pass giving Kansas a 7-0 lead with 11:14 left in the quarter.
Wagner got third and manageable on their second series but got back to back delay of game penalties making it third and long and forcing a punt.
After the Jayhawks couldn’t do much on their second series they punted. Something that caught everyone off guard is the fact Grayden Addison handled the punting duties. His first punt went 49 yards and Wagner took over at their 24-yard line.
The Kansas offense was backed up with a holding call and Daniels connected with Boden Groen for 27yards. Two plays later Daniels and Henderson combined on a nine yard TD pass. KU extended the lead to 14-0 with 3:12 left.
The quarter ended on a Daniel Hishaw first down run. Kansas 14-0.
Second Quarter
KU started the second quarter with an eight play, 78 yard drive that ended with Daniels throwing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Cam Pickett. On the extra point it was a direct snap to Carson Bruhn for a two-point conversion giving Kansas a 22-0 lead with 13:06 left.
Both teams stalled on drives and with 7:26 the Jayhawks took over on their own 32 yard-line. At this point Kansas held a 207-37 total yard advantage.
The Jayhawks went on a 5 play, 68 yard drive that ended with Daniel Hishaw breaking several tackles and scoring from 20 yards. That pushed the lead to 29-0 with 5:19 left in the half.
Wagner put together their best of the drive of the night going 75 yards on eight plays. QB Jack Stevens threw a swing pass in the flat and Jeremiah McCullough scored from 45 yards. That made it 29-7.
The Jayhawks took over and marched the length of the field as the half was coming to a close. On first and goal from the nine yard line Jalon Daniels was picked off in the end zone. That ended the first half.
Third Quarter
On the first drive of the second half the Jayhawks pretty much turned out the lights. Literally. Daniels and Henderson hooked up again this time for a 62 yard touchdown. After that, the lights went dark and the fireworks went off. The catch was Henderson’s sixth on the night for 130 yards and two TD.
Wagner didn’t do much on their next possession and Cole Ballard took over at quarterback. Several starters ended their night. Ballard led the team on a 10 play, 60 yard drive with a field goal from Laith Marjan. That made the score 39-7 with 6:55 left.
Both teams traded drives to close out the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The Jayhawks took the first drive of the fourth quarter and marched 68 yards on eight plays. On fourth and goal from the three Johnny Thompson fumbled at the goal line and it was recovered by Wagner.
Isaiah Marshall led the team on a nine play, 55-yard TD drive that almost took up 6:00. Harry Stewart punched it in for the score and the Jayhawks extended the lead to 46-7.
