Badgers starting QB Billy Edwards Jr. exits game with non-contact injury

The Badgers starting quarterback left Thursday’s game in the 1st half with an apparent injury.

The Wisconsin Badgers have dealt with injuries to their starting quarterback for two consecutive years, and that luck has unfortunately not gone away.

On a run-fake leading to a handoff, starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. went down in the first half with what appeared to be a non-contact injury. He walked off on his own power and immediately went into the injury tent, forcing sophomore backup quarterback Danny O’Neil into the game.

Edwards was in the injury tent for a few minutes before walking to the locker room with trainers, again on his own power.

Just before halftime, Edwards was ruled questionable to return with a lower-body injury, per a UW official.

O’Neil came in on a 3rd & 7, completing a five-yard pass to Trech Kekahuna. He then was able to convert a 4th & 2 with a quarterback keeper. However, the drive stalled shortly after, as O’Neil was sacked on 2nd & 3 on a play-action pass, while Wisconsin had a delay of game right after, ultimately leading them to punt one play later.

Edwards’s injury comes one year after Wisconsin lost starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke to a torn ACL on a quarterback run during Week 3. That prompted backup quarterback Braedyn Locke to take over for the remainder of the season.

In 2023, starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai broke his thumb, causing him to miss a month of action as well.

We’ll continue to update this story with any updates on Edwards’s injury.
