After the Oklahoma City Thunder brought home the NBA championship, they were widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in league history. They had a historic 68-14 regular-season record and the all-time best point differential at plus-12.9.

While the Thunder had their ups and downs in the playoffs, they came away with the Larry O'Brien trophy. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander completed one of the greatest individual campaigns ever. He won every individual award available, from MVP to NBA Finals MVP.

That said, while the Thunder have convinced millions, if not billions, of their all-time team case, there's at least one doubter that remains. Panathinaikos BC head coach Ergin Ataman has a bone to pick about NBA champions who refer to themselves as world champions.

Ataman is considered one of the greatest EuroLeague coaches of all time. He has won three titles in 2021, 2022 and 2024 with Anadolu Efes and Panathinaikos BC. He is also considered the most successful coach in Turkish basketball history.

The EuroLeague coach is the latest of a long list of people who've had that stance. It happens every year. That said, it's purely semantical. The NBA is the best basketball league in the world. There's a reason why it's the top destination for basketball players. Any hypothetical matchup between an NBA team and a EuroLeague team would have one outcome.

But according to Ataman, he believes EuroLeague teams could beat NBA teams. The head coach cited some preseason exhibitions in recent years. He even went as far as to say that the NBA teams are just one player away from being on an even playing field.

“If you took out one star player from these NBA teams, I believe that many EuroLeague teams can beat the NBA teams. Listen, I believe that two years or three years ago, in the preseason, there were many games between the EuroLeague teams and NBA teams," Ataman said. "If I'm not wrong, 70-80% of the games, the EuroLeague teams won. There is no big difference between the NBA teams and between the EuroLeague teams."

It's a bit misleading to use the preseason as a way to show that EuroLeague teams could pull off the upsets against your average NBA squad. Most of the time, the latter only plays their starters for one quarter at most. Even more times, it's usually the back of the depth chart who plays.

"With all due respect with the NBA, they have many star players, they are really star players," Ataman said. "Like LeBron, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry and most of them if you took out one of them, a lot of EuroLeague teams would win.”

Even if Ataman wants to be technically correct on the NBA champions not being world champions debate, the 2024-25 Thunder are one of the greatest teams in basketball history. They made blowing teams out left and right look like a walk in the park. I seriously doubt any EuroLeague team could keep a game competitive against them. It's just a different level of competition.
