Mike: “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”
Patrick: I’ve read the preseason articles and have listened to the podcasts. I still have no idea what is going to happen this year.
Jon: That’s the way it should be. I mean, every year we fall for the same stuff. Teams are highly ranked and then they fall apart. Lower ranked teams come up the ladder. The portal has made this all more confusing as ever. So I’d recommend to everybody that you just sit back, relax, and let life happen.
Jarek: I can hardly contain my excitement that Husker football is back! I’m ready to rock n roll baby!
Andy: I’m so ready for this.
Northwestern (+4.5) at Tulane
Patrick: Tulane University 32 Northwestern University 10
Jon: Does Northwestern still have a football team? They used to be good at rock fighting, but I don’t think they’re good at anything anymore. Tulane 28, Northwestern University 3
Jarek: Northwestern just isn’t as good as it used to be. Couple that with the fact that Tulane has gotten way better over the last few years and I see trouble for those that reside in Evanston. Tulane 31, Northwestern 20
Mike: Northwestern now appears to have a quarterback; not sure they have anyone to catch the ball. Tulane 34, NW 31
Andy: I guess it’s a close spread between two awful teams, but my interest in this shit heap of a game ends with this prediction. Perverts 20 Tulane 13
Utah (-5.5) at UCLA
Patrick: University of Utah 24 University of California Los Angeles 13
Jon: UCLA picked up a good quarterback or so we were told during the offseason. Tino Sunseri is their new offensive coordinator, coming over from Indiana. That’s a step in the right direction. Perhaps this will lead to a new explosion in LA. UCLA 32, Utah 30
Jarek: Zero denying that UCLA got a big upgrade at the quarterback position. Utah won’t have Cam Rising for anymore games so they won’t have to worry about a change at QB 3 weeks into the season. I’m just a little worried about the Bruins defense, but this should be close. Utah 34 UCLA 31.
Mike: Why did this game get stuck in #B1GafterDark? This might be the second best game on Saturday. UCLA 28, Utah 24
Andy: I think UCLA is still being underrated after their bad start against a brutal schedule last season. Utah, on the other hand, hasn’t been Utah for a while and are coming off a next-to-last finish in the full of mid-majors Big 12. UCLA 34 Utah 17
Florida Atlantic (+14.5) at Maryland
Patrick: University of Maryland 21 Florida Atlantic University 9
Jon: Maryland is a decent-sized favorite. I know nothing of Florida Atlantic. Maryland 38, Other guys 13
Jarek: Maryland is always a pretty decent team in the first half of the season. Mike Locksley admitted to losing the locker room last year but has seemingly regained control. Maryland won’t have any issues here. Terps 41 FAU 17
Mike: How bad is this week’s schedule? This was one of the top five B1G games. Terps 37, Owls 21
Andy: Another godawful matchup between two godawful teams – if we can’t get other top ten matchups, I’d honestly prefer some FCS games. I’ll go with Maryland HC Mike Locksley here – I think he’s a solid coach who just made a bad job decision in a desire to return home. Terps 33 FAU 20
Texas (+2.5) at Ohio State
Patrick: Ohio State University 23 University of Texas 21 (or the other way around…idk)
Jon: Earlier I said that people should just let life happen well I hope like hell it certainly happens to Texas. I hope they throw 18 interceptions and lose by 30 points. That likely won’t happen. But a guy can always dream. Jeremiah Smith is better than that Wingo kid. Ohio State 38, Texas 34
Jarek: I’m interested to see if Arch Manning is the supposed savior for Texas that he’s billed to be. First games are really interesting, but my eyes will be glued to this one. I hope Texas sucks something awful, but know better. Ohio State still wins. Buckeyes 37 Horns Down 31
Mike: When you call Arch a “savior”, does that mean he’s not going to fumble the ball away in the closing minutes…with a chance to tie the playoff semifinal game in the Cotton Bowl? Bucknuts 31, Bovines 28
Andy: I’m curious to see how Arch looks this season. His 1st chance hitting the field as the #1 starter comes in a pretty raucous environment on the road, and the Bucks will definitely be trying to rattle the kid. He may have big days on big stages ahead of him, but I don’t think this is one of them. Bucks 27 Horns 20
Nebraska (-6.5) vs. Cincinnati
(Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City)
Patrick: University of Nebraska 28 University of Cincinnati 23
Jon: I know I’m already starting to get jitters about this game. We know Nebraska’s tendency to win the offseason and I don’t know what to expect here. My scarred Husker persona believes we’ll probably lose by one score. We shouldn’t. We should beat the hell out of these guys. Nebraska 42, Cincinnati 28
Jarek: Nebraska’s offense has improved. The defense has talent, albeit raw up front. Cincinnati has lost multiple weapons from last year, but still has a game wrecker at D-Line. This is a “road game” with a “home crowd”. That should be enough to win. Nebraska 37 Cincinnati 27.
Mike: Talking season is over…now it’s time to show something, and more specifically, show that Nebraska is finally done underperforming their talent level. I look at this game on paper, and I see a 31-14 Nebraska victory. But then I remember that I’ve been anticipating that level of performance for the last ten years…and that makes me hope that NU can squeak this one out. My victimized fanhood says NU 23, Cinci 21. So let’s split the difference: Huskers 28, Bearcats 17
Andy: It all looks good on paper, but there’s a lot of unproven talent out there in big roles for the Huskers everywhere except QB, the offensive line and the defensive backfield. Now is Cincinnati a world-beater?
No.
The Bearcats would be a solid win, but no one is going to be chest-thumping if we do. Should we lose, it won’t be 2022 Northwestern devastating, but it would let a lot of air out of the red balloons and we would roll into that Michigan game with a much different attitude than if we could win this one convincingly.
Personally, I believe we are going show out tonight. The offense might have some burps, but I believe they will roll up some yards with Dylan and Emmett leading the way. I’m probably expecting more than should from the defense – and mobile QB’s always cause us fits – but they’ll do enough and we cruise…sort of. Huskers 34 Cincy 21
