Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Milwaukee Brewers: Pavin Smith could miss time with leg injury

Nabil Crismatt gets the start for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday, Aug. 28, against the Milwaukee Brewers.

MILWAUKEE — Pavin Smith wasn't in the Diamondbacks lineup Thursday, Aug. 28, replaced by Tyler Locklear at first base. Smith suffered a left quad injury during the previous night's game, and will head back to Arizona to get imaging on his leg.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said there's a good chance a roster move involving Smith will happen, meaning he could be headed to the injured list.

"I think one is imminent, but not certain," Lovullo said. "We thought maybe he'd be available at some point during the day (Thursday). That doesn't look very likely. But anything's possible."

Smith was just reinstated from the 10-day injured list on Aug. 18, after missing a good deal of time with a strained oblique.

Rashi ready for big league debut

Diamondbacks right-hander Taylor Rashi arrived here at American Family Field early in the game Aug. 27, following his call-up from Triple-A Reno. He was getting loose in the bullpen in the ninth inning, but never came in to pitch.

So the first time that Rashi takes the mound will be the major league debut for the 29-year-old from Torrance, California.

Rashi has been in the Diamondbacks organization for a couple of years, and at Reno, he was 4-2 with a 3.48 ERA in 40 appearances this season. He has played professional ball since 2019.

After a water bath from Reno teammates, he was off to pack and catch his flight to Milwaukee, which was delayed in Denver. During the trip, he reflected on his career and finally getting to the big leagues.

He got to call his best friend, a police officer who made the trip to Milwaukee. His mother was on vacation, but she will catch up with Rashi in Los Angeles when the Diamondbacks play the Dodgers starting Friday, Aug. 29.

"It means a lot to know that you worked so hard for something for so long," Rashi said. "I kind of just kept my head down. There's times where I was like, maybe this isn't worth it, but (Wednesday) made it all worth it. It's a special feeling."

Diamondbacks bobbleheads part of Milwaukee museum

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum near downtown Milwaukee has around 10,000 bobblehead dolls on display in its space.

A few of those are Diamondbacks bobbleheads, featuring recent players such as Jake Lamb, Randy Johnson, and Luis Gonzalez. Most of a tall shelf in the museum is occupied by Arizona dolls, in an area where bobbleheads from other MLB teams are on display.

Elsewhere are mascot bobbleheads, including Baxter, the Diamondbacks mascot.

The museum, operational since 2014, also has Arizona State, Arizona Wildcats, Phoenix Suns and even a couple of Arizona Coyotes bobbleheads on display. None are for sale and come from the teams or athletes themselves, or are donated by the public.

Diamondbacks RHP Nabil Crismatt (1-0, 1.00) or TBA vs. Brewers LHP José Quintana (10-4, 3.32).

At American Family Field: The Diamondbacks could opt to use an opener out of the bullpen, as they did last week with left-hander Jalen Beeks pitching an inning. Crismatt came on and pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Beeks, and also pitched well in his first appearance, a start in Colorado after being called up from Triple-A Reno. He's shown a good change-up that has kept opposing hitters off balance. Crismatt makes his fifth career appearance in Milwaukee, where he has a 3.18 career ERA. ... Quintana, in his 14th season in the majors, has been a big part of the starting rotation since signing with the Brewers in spring training. He's gone at least five innings in each of his past five starts and has not allowed more than three earned runs in those five starts. Quintana has also not lost a game in more than a month, but he's 1-2 with a 6.13 earned run average in eight career starts against the Diamondbacks.
