The Colorado Buffaloes are entering a new era. The stars of the early Deion Sanders tenure, including his son Shedeur and Travis Hunter, have moved on to the NFL. Now, the roster presents some interesting question marks.
Despite that, Sanders is incredibly confident in his team. In fact, ahead of the season on the Colorado Football Coaches Show, he claimed that this year’s team is actually the best of the three he’s had in Boulder.
“I think this is the best team we’ve ever assembled thus far,” Deion Sanders said. “We had some tremendous athletes, but we have some tremendous athletes now. Overall, this is the best team, as well as the best staff.”
Deion Sanders inherited a Colorado team that was in a bad situation when he took over in 2023. The Buffaloes, at that point, had been coming off a 1-11 season and hadn’t had a winning record since 2016. At the time, Sanders very openly used the transfer portal to flip the roster. That included bringing in those players like Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.
In his first two seasons at Colorado, Sanders went 4-8 before going 9-4. That was a major stride forward in his second season with the program, but given some of the players who moved on, it seems like, on paper, there should be a step back. However, as Sanders highlighted, the team’s depth is much stronger now.
“With the portal, everybody’s got a little bit of this, a little bit of that,” Sanders said. “But I like the depth. I like — okay, because I’ve got to prepare for the ifs. This happens? Where we going with that? If that happens, let’s make sure we’re straight with it. I like the ifs and we’re prepared for those ifs.”
This all comes after what was a very difficult offseason for Sanders. He was diagnosed and battled bladder cancer, eventually beating it. However, that forced him to be away from the team more than he would have liked. It’s also changed his lifestyle completely. Coming off of that, getting back to football has to be a relief.
Deion Sanders explains what led him to naming Kaidon Salter Colorado’s starting quarterback
Colorado had an interesting quarterback battle this offseason, which Kaidon Salter eventually won over Julian Lewis. Now, Deion Sanders has shared some insight into what led to that decision.
“I like that he has experience. I like that he’s a dual-threat. He throws a good football as well as he can make the necessary plays that we’re gonna need to be made and the timing of that. I don’t think the stage will too big for him or the lights will be too bright. I think he can handle it and he’s very versatile. He’s gonna impose problems to opposing defenses,” Sanders said.
“He can throw the ball, but it’s hard to prepare for running. It’s hard to prepare for guys that can run the football and we can never appreciate him in the manner we ought too because in practice, you don’t get credit for running the football as a quarterback. You get credit for throwing the football and completing passes and your accuracy, so we have not even seen as a team how good he can possibly be.”
This Colorado team will be tested right away. The Buffaloes open hosting Georgia Tech on Friday, August 29th, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
