Alyssa Thomas has built her career on doing the things few players can do, and Tuesday night in Los Angeles was another example. The Phoenix Mercury forward not only led her team to a 92-84 win over the Sparks, she made league history in the process.

Alyssa Thomas makes history again with record-breaking triple-double

Thomas finished with 12 points, 16 rebounds, and 15 assists, recording her seventh triple-double of the season. That number pushed her past her own previous record of six, set back in 2023. No one else in WNBA history has ever come close to putting up that many in a single year.

She also became the first player ever to put together at least 10 points, 15 rebounds, and 15 assists in one game. To make it more remarkable, she played through illness, later admitting she “still wasn’t feeling the best” but refused to let it slow her down.

Mercury climb into fourth place

The victory moved Phoenix to 23-14, giving them sole possession of fourth place in the standings ahead of New York. With the playoffs closing in, every win matters, and the Mercury showed the kind of balance that makes them dangerous.

Satou Sabally paced the team with 19 points, while Kahleah Copper added 18. Sami Whitcomb knocked down five of her first six shots from deep, finishing with 17. DeWanna Bonner added 14, and Phoenix’s bench accounted for nine of the team’s 11 three-pointers.

Los Angeles fought hard behind Dearica Hamby’s 25 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Rickea Jackson added 21 and four triples, while Kelsey Plum poured in 20 to push her season total past 700 points for the third time in her career.

A career that keeps raising the bar

Even in a league filled with versatile stars, Thomas stands out. She now has 18 career triple-doubles, more than double the total of any other player. And she’s not just stacking numbers, she’s doing things no one in the WNBA or NBA has ever done, such as posting back-to-back games with at least 12 rebounds and 15 assists.

The Mercury are at home for their next three, as they will host the Chicago Sky on Thursday, before the Liberty and Fever come to town.
