MM 8.27: Malik Washington named to Shaun Alexander Award watchlist

This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.

Freshman quarterback Malik Washington was named to the 2025 Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year award watchlist.

Formerly called the College Football Freshman Player of the Year award, the Shaun Alexander Award is given to a college football player who leads an exceptional campaign during their first year.

Washington, a quarterback from Glen Burnie, Md., has shown plenty of promise going into the 2025 season. Before he became a Terp, he was named a Top-50 recruit, ranked second of all players in Maryland, and called the fifth-best QB in the nation by 247Sports. As a high school senior, Washington averaged a 65.3% completion rate and threw 22 passing touchdowns.

This preseason, ESPN named Washington one of the Big Ten’s “Three Freshmen to Watch” and projected him as the fifth-best freshman in college football.

Maryland football has not released the 2025 starting lineup, and questions remain about who will take the field as the Terps’ starting quarterback throughout the season.
