T-Ron Richardson

Hopewell (Va.) defensive lineman T-Ron Richardson has made his college decision, and he’s headed to the SEC.

The three-star announced he has committed Oklahoma, choosing the Sooners over a final group that included Virginia Tech, Penn State, Maryland, and Syracuse, all of which hosted him for official visits this summer.

“Oklahoma just stayed consistent from the beginning,” Richardson told Rivals. “They offered me early and kept calling, texting, FaceTiming — always checking in. I could feel how much they wanted me.”

Richardson’s relationship with defensive line coach Todd Bates and head coach Brent Venables was key throughout the process.

“Coach Bates is a great guy. Super high energy, intense when he’s locked in, and says what he means. And Coach Venables — he’s nonstop energy. We can talk about anything. He’s super relatable and reachable, even as the head coach. Plus, he’s a defensive guy, and his plan for me was strong. He’s changing the program for the better and getting guys ready to compete in the SEC.”

Oklahoma official visit made a lasting impact

Richardson made his official visit to Norman in June and walked away with a strong impression.

“It was a great visit — being around the people, feeling the energy,” he said. “I actually thought about committing during that visit, but I wanted to wait, weigh everything, and make sure. Through it all, Oklahoma stayed consistent, and my feelings never changed.”

That consistency helped push the Sooners over the top. And it wasn’t just about football.

“I picked Oklahoma because of Coach Bates, the S.O.U.L. Mission program they have to set me up for life after football, and the community. The fans, the support, the love — it’s all real.”

From one offer to 30-plus

Richardson’s recruitment took off quickly after his first offer from James Madison back in early February.

“I needed that one to get going — that was the spark,” he said. “Oklahoma ended up being my 10th offer, and from there, it really picked up.”

Now committed, Richardson is locked in with the Sooners and ready to be part of what Venables is building in Norman.

“It’s a good feeling in Norman. The culture, the energy, the people — they make it great.”
