The KSR Game of the Week is heading to Georgetown this Friday.
After a thrilling start to the 2025 Kentucky high school football season last weekend, we’re in for another excellent round of games in Week 2. A local rivalry will headline this week’s action as Great Crossing is set to host No. 25 Scott County. This will mark just the eighth-ever matchup between these programs, a series that had been dominated by Scott County up until last season. After losing the first six games dating back to 2019 (including the 2021 Class 5A state championship), Great Crossing cruised to a 46-15 win in 2024.
What will this year’s showdown bring us? Here’s what you need to know about the Cardinals and Warhawks ahead of Friday night’s showdown. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Great Crossing High School.
No. 25 Scott County Cardinals (1-0)
Led by a couple of Division I-caliber players, Scott County is on a revenge tour following a 6-6 finish in Class 5A a season ago. Longtime head coach Jim McKee (now in year 29) led the Cardinals to a dominant 42-6 home win over George Rogers Clark to open the 2025 campaign. Great Crossing will pose a much more dangerous threat.
Helping make it all happen for the Cardinals are a pair of juniors: running back Timmy Emongo and defensive back Ju Ju Harmon — both have been offered by Kentucky. Scott County features a run-heavy offense, Emongo rushing for 113 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s win. He even hauled in an interception on defense. Harmon tied for the team lead in tackles with seven while also recovering a fumble. The Cardinals recorded two successful receptions against GRC, both going to Emongo (31 yards for a touchdown) and Harmon (11 yards). Don’t sleep on junior Skyler Way, though, who racked up 163 rushing yards and a score in the opener.
On defense, juniors Riley Colvin and Ashwer Brewer are names to know. Against GRC, Riley finished with seven tackles (1.5 for loss) while Brewer added six of his own along with an interception. Scott County limited GRC to 245 total yards of offense last week, most of that coming on the ground.
Great Crossing Warhawks (0-1)
After making it to the Class 6A state semifinals a year ago, head coach Ricky Bowling has Great Crossing looking to take that next step. Now in year six as the head man, Bowling brought back star running back Luke Ballard, who looked the part in last week’s 54-21 season-opening loss to No. 7 Franklin County. The Mr. Football candidate rattled off 159 rushing yards on 19 attempts with a pair of touchdowns. The Warhawks will need another big performance from him on Friday.
Ballard could use some help, too. Most of Great Crossing’s offense flows through him. Junior quarterback Sam Penn went 8-15 for 35 yards and an interception against Franklin County. Can senior wide receiver Trey Campbell run back another kickoff return in Week 2 like he did this past Friday? On defense, senior Wyatt Highlley will look to replicate his 20-tackle performance (two for loss) in the opener, which also included a fumble recovery. Junior Braelin Williams finished with 10 tackles in that win, as well.
Great Crossing fell out of the Top 25 with its blowout Week 1 defeat, but still picked up a couple of votes in the updated poll. Defending homefield against a ranked opponent would likely push them back up the standings.
