West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez didn’t leave much doubt when it comes to his quarterback position on his weekly radio show.
That’s because Rodriguez made it clear that the plan is to play multiple options at the position. When asked about the possibility of seeing more than one quarterback this coming weekend, Rodriguez said this.
“Yeah. I bet that will be the case every week,” he said.
The veteran head coach has made it clear that he isn’t opposed to playing multiple quarterbacks since he arrived if the players prove capable of winning games with and right now he believes that all five have earned reps. Now, whether that spills into a game is another thing but it’s clear there will be more than one taking snaps against Robert Morris.
Redshirt junior Nicco Marchiol, redshirt senior Jaylen Henderson, redshirt junior Max Brown, freshman Scotty Fox, and redshirt freshman Khalil Wilkins have all been competing for the job and Rodriguez was asked to discuss each of the options.
“Nicco has got the most experience, him and Jaylen Henderson both have the most experience played power four football, and you can see it he has a feel for the game a little bit he understands a lot of things quicker because he’s been around. He’s got good arm strength; he’s a bigger guy but he’ll run. He’s a willing runner, he may not be fast, but he’s got some athletic ability and can run,” he said.
When it comes to Henderson, Rodriguez said that he is similar in the sense that he has experience at Texas A&M and has some moxie about him while understanding what is being asked of him and can make all the throws.
“I’ve seen him get better and better and more comfortable,” he said.
Brown is another transfer that spent time at Florida and Charlotte, and he is a big, strong quarterback with tremendous arm strength but might be the best athlete of all the options.
The two young players in Fox and Wilkins are both athletic signal callers.
“Scotty has got one of the quickest releases of any quarterback I’ve ever had. He has a great release, great size and can run. He’s been really impressive,” Rodriguez said.
And while Wilkins was limited due to a shoulder he has displayed his athleticism as well and has really come on in the past couple of weeks in preparation for the season.
“All five of these guys are getting reps now and it’s been a fun thing to do and the competition has been really good,” Rodriguez said.
And when asked if all five could see time this year, Rodriguez replied.
“No that could be totally accurate,” he said.
