Injury Updates
Kansas State Head Coach Chris Klieman said the X-Ray came back negative on Dylan Edwards and his ankle, but didn’t know much more than that. His treatment will start on Monday afternoon and then practice resumes on Tuesday. He expects Wednesday to be the day to get an idea. With no injury reports for non-conference games in the Big 12, the next update likely comes when Matt Wells speaks to the media on Thursday.
As for the impact, Klieman said losing Edwards on the first play was “big.” He didn’t expect Joe Jackson to play 55 plays in the game, only around 25. With 30-40 going to Edwards.
Beyond that, Klieman said he didn’t think K-State had too much else flare up through the game. But the focus might be more on recovering from the long travels now.
Defensive Breakdowns for K-State
Klieman addressed the breakdown on Iowa State’s fourth-down conversion that won the game. He said the plan was for Cody Stufflebean to be the running back, who ultimately caught the pass to seal the deal.
Why was a down defensive end on the running back? Klieman says because Kansas State “had to send pressure,” because Rocco Becht is “too good” if you let him sit back there. In the end, Qua Moss couldn’t get to Becht in time and Stufflebean couldn’t get outside to slow down Carson Hansen.
“Marathon, not a sprint”
Kansas State’s head coach wanted to make it clear that they were aware of the challenge they now faced. Recovering from the loss to Iowa State isn’t just a one-week bounce back now. It is going to be more than just that, they have to make amends over the next few weeks.
It definitely seems like Klieman is aware of the pressure and circumstance of losing the Week 0 game to the Cyclones.
Kansas State Offensive Line
The pass protection was praised by Klieman. He was aware that the run blocking had to improve. One of the ways they might address some of the deficiencies on the line comes from highly rated redshirt freshman Gus Hawkins. Klieman says he “has to play” this week.
