Michael Massey returns, John Rave sent down

Massey could find it hard to get playing time.

The Royals announced they have activated Michael Massey from the Injured List and have optioned John Rave to Triple-A Omaha.

Massey has been out since June 7 with an ankle injury, but had suffered a setback in his rehab in early July and again in early August. He homered in his last game with Omaha on Saturday, and hit .258/.31/.433 in 25 games with the Storm Chasers.

Masssey has struggled to hit this year, batting just .202/.221/.258 in 56 games until he went down with injury. His wRC+ of 25 is the worst in baseball for anyone with at least 200 plate appearances. Since Massey went down, the Royals have acquired Adam Frazier, Randall Grichuk, and Mike Yastrzemski, so playing time could be more limited for the 27-year-old. He split time between second base and left field for the Storm Chasers. Massey has also battled back injuries throughout his career, and the Royals have talked about him playing more outfield to reduce the chance of reinjuring his back. He also has options remaining if the Royals want to send him back to the minors.

Rave has hit .199/.286/.324 with four home runs and seven steals in 63 games. He had a brief hot streak at the start of August, but has gone 0-for-13 in his last four games and has provided inconsistent defense.
